TEMPLE SOFTBALL WINS TWO IN FLORIDA

The Temple University softball team continued play on Wednesday, March 13, with games against Northern Illinois University and Quinnipiac University. In the opening game against NIU, pitcher Liz Naughton earned the 3-2 win by limiting the Huskies to seven hits and two walks in 10 innings. Naughton struck out five NIU batters in pitching the complete game.

The Huskies rode a 2-0 lead into the fourth when Temple put a run on the board. The Owls then tied it in the fifth when sophomore Katie Weigle crossed the plate on an error. With the game tied at 2-2, the contest entered extra innings. Temple sealed the win in the tenth when Alexis Gary scored on a passed ball.

Offensively, the Owls were led by senior Katie Spencer, who was two for five in the game. Also showing strength at the plate were junior Ashley Caudill (two for four), sophomore Alexis Gary (two for four), and sophomore Katie Weigle (two for five).

Following the 10 a.m. win the Owls kept the bats alive for a noon outing with Quinnipiac University. The Owls posted 13 hits in the seven-inning contest. Spencer (two for four), Gary (three for four, four RBIs) and freshman Aida Esquer (two for four, one RBI) led the Owls to the 6-2 win. Senior Nanci Lima gave up seven hits, but had nine strikeouts and 0 walks in earning the win.

The Owls (9-12) will face nationally ranked Purdue on Friday in a doubleheader at Disney World. The first game is scheduled for a 2:30 p.m. start. They conclude their spring break trip on Saturday facing another ranked team, the University of Iowa. Game one of the doubleheader is set to begin at noon.
