OWLS WOMEN FALL TO IOWA STATE IN NCAA FIRST ROUND

3.17.02 | Women's Basketball

Ames, Ia. - The Temple women's basketball team (20-11) took on the challenge of being a 14 seed playing against Iowa State (24-8) the host three seed and lost 72-57. The Owls, who were making their second NCAA Tournament appearance in school history, refused to give up the game without a fight. Temple won the turnover battle when it committed nine while forcing 17. The Owls also had more steals (8) than the Cyclones (6). But Temple was outrebounded 40-29 and while the Cyclones shot 53.8 percent, the Owls shot 32.8 percent.

In the early going, Temple dictated the pace of the game and despite trailing 20-10 with just under eight minutes remaining, the Owls battled back and took a 23-22 lead with 3:45 remaining in the first half. However, the Cyclones closed the half on a 13-2 run to take a 35-25 advantage at intermission. In the second stanza, Temple trimmed the lead to four, with a 6-0 run of its own. Iowa State extended the lead to as many as 10 points but the Owls once again battled back and cut the lead to seven points with 12:52 remaining and that's as close as Temple would get.

Junior guard Stacey Smalls led the Owls with18 points. Freshman Ari Moore (10) was the only other Temple player in double figures. Senior Natalia Isaac added nine points and sophomore Christena Hamilton scored eight points.

Mary Cofield led Iowa State with a game-high 20 points on 7-8 shooting, including 6-6 from three-point range. Angie Welle (18) and Tracy Gahan (10) were the other double figure scorers for the Cyclones. Welle also lead all rebounders with 15 boards and Gahan added 11 for Iowa State.
