OWLS SOFTBALL DROPS TWO TO MASSACHUSETTS

PHILADELPHIA -- The Temple University softball team (9-19, 0-2 A-10) lost two tough games, 0-4 and 1-7, to the University of Massachusetts in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon, March 23, 2002 at Erny Field.

In game one, the Owls got their first of just two hits in the third inning when senior Katie Spencer singled up the middle. Temple pitcher Bari Lynn Pflueger held the Minutewomen scoreless until the fourth inning when shortstop Emily Robustelli and outfielder Aisha Franke each had an RBI single to make it 2-0 UMass. UMass advanced their lead to 4-0 in the sixth on a Robustelli groundout that scored Anna Perey and an RBI double that scored Ashley Bakken. In the bottom of the sixth, Temple sophomore Katie Weigle singled for the Owls second hit of the game.

Game two started with offense, as each team scored in the first two innings. UMass scored on a two RBI single by designated hitter Kaila Holtz in the first stanza. In the second inning the Owls came alive on an RBI single by junior catcher Ashley Caudill to score senior Chrissy Harris. The offense continued for the Minutewomen who scored three in the fourth inning and two in the fifth to make it 7-1.

The Owls host the Minutewomen tomorrow at 12 noon to close out the three-game series.
