4.15.02 | Softball

Temple University junior Liz Naughton (Olyphant, Pa./Mid-Valley H.S.) was today (Monday, April 15, 2002) named the Atlantic 10 Conference Softball Co-Pitcher of the Week for the week ending Sunday, April 14. Naughton shares the award with Massachusetts' Kaila Holtz.

Naughton pitched three complete games, including two shutouts, last week en route to three victories (Pennsylvania, 1; Fordham, 2). In 19 innings, she gave up one earned run and struck out 22 batters while allowing just two walks. Opponents managed just one extra base hit against Naughton during a week in which the Owls posted a 4-0 record.

This season, Naughton has a 2.99 earned run average and a 6-8 record in 22 appearances. In 105.1 innings of work, she has registered 71 strikeouts and 32 walks. Opponents are batting just .234 with Naughton on the mound.

Naughton is the second Owl softball player to receive A-10 recognition in as many weeks. On April 8, junior Christine Harris was named the league's player of the week.

Temple (19-20, 9-3 A-10) has won 10 straight games under the direction of fifth-year head coach Rocci Pignoli. The Owls have not lost a game since dropping a 9-0 decision to UMass on Sunday, March 24. Temple is currently tied for second place with Dayton in the Atlantic 10 standings. The undefeated Minutewomen (12-0) are in first place.

The Owls return to action this Wednesday, April 17, with a 4:00 p.m. game at Erny Field against Philadelphia rival, Villanova.
