5.10.02 | Women's Lacrosse

Charlottesville, Va. -- The Temple lacrosse team (14-5) lost to Virginia (15-3) 20-8 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Thursday, May 9. The Cavaliers opened the scoring when Amy Appelt tallied the first of her five goals just over two minutes into the contest. The Virginia attack would find the back of the net seven more times to hold an 8-0 advantage with 3:34 remaining in the half. The Owls then scored three unanswered goals in less than one minute as senior Jen Jefferson (Annapolis, Md./Annapolis) scored two of her team-high three goals twenty seconds apart. Virginia added two more goals to push the lead to 10-3 before Temple responded with a goal by junior Liz Frengs (Collingswood, N.J./Collingswood) to close out the half trailing 10-4.

After a 90-minute delay due to severe thunderstorms, play resumed and the Cavaliers proved that the rain did not cool them off as they outscored the Owls 10-4 to win the game and advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Junior Patience Synnestvedt (Bryn Athyn, Pa./Academy of the New Church) had two goals for Temple and was joined in the scoring column by fellow junior Deanna Radcliffe (Collegeville, Pa./Perkiomen Valley) with a goal. Senior Robin Keevan (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) added a goal while senior Noelle Cebron (Yorktown, N.Y./Yorktown) had three assists to bring her single season record to 37. Junior goalie Sheena Oommen (New Hyde Park, N.Y./New Hyde Park) had 12 saves.

Appelt and Lauren Aumiller paced the Virginia attack with five goals each. Cavalier net-minder Andrea Pfeiffer had seven saves. Virginia will now advance to face North Carolina in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
