5.10.02 | Softball

The Temple softball team, seeded No. 2, lost a second round Verizon Atlantic 10 Championships game to fourth-seeded Rhode Island, 3-1 in eight innings on Friday, May 10 in Kingston, R.I. The Owls will face the winner of the Massachusetts versus Saint Joseph's game in an elimination contest at approximately 5:00 p.m. today. The winner of the afternoon game will face No. 4 seed and host Rhode Island at 12 noon tomorrow, Saturday, May 11, in the title game. If the Rams lose Saturday's game, a second contest will immediately follow to determine the 2002 champion, as it is a double elimination tournament.

Winning pitcher Gwen Rack supplied the GWRI in the top of the eighth, doubling in two runs to give the Rams a 3-1 lead. Rack then pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom half to seal the victory.

The Owls lone run came in the bottom of the fifth inning. Chrissy Pearson, pinch running for Ashley Caudill, scored on a two-out error by URI's second baseman on a ball hit by Lynsey Grace.

Temple managed five hits, all singles, in the game among three players. Katie Spencer and Alexis Gary each had two hits and Caudill contributed one.

Rack earned the victory by pitching all eight innings, striking out six without giving up an earned run. Liz Naughton (12-11) was tagged with the loss, throwing all eight innings, striking out six and allowing seven hits while giving up three earned runs.

Temple (27-24), under the direction of fifth-year head coach Rocci Pignoli, had won 18 of its last 21 games and six of its last seven prior to the loss. The Owls entered the Championships after posting a 15-6 regular season league mark. The team is seeking its first Atlantic 10 title since 1990, when it shared the crown with Massachusetts.
