SOFTBALL LOSES A-10 ELIMINATION GAME TO UMASS, 3-0

5.10.02 | Softball

The Temple University softball team lost a 3-0 decision to Massachusetts in a late afternoon Atlantic 10 Tournament softball game in Kingston, R.I., on Friday, May 10. The elimination game loss should end the season for the Owls (27-25), who are unlikely to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.

Temple could manage only two hits against Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Year Kaila Holtz, who earned the complete game shutout.

Katie Spencer and Alexis Gary both singled for the Owls. Temple had only two runners in scoring position in the game.

The Minutewomen had three, one-run innings to secure the victory, scoring in the bottom of the second, fourth and sixth innings.

Bari Lynn Pflueger was tagged with the loss, giving up nine hits and one earned run in six innings of work without giving up a walk.

Earlier in the day, No. 2 seed Temple dropped a 3-1 decision to Rhode Island in eight innings. The Owls opened the Championships on Thursday with a 5-4, extra inning win over No. 3 seed Saint Joseph's.

The Minutewomen take on host Rhode Island at 12 noon tomorrow (Saturday, May 11) for the Verizon Atlantic 10 Softball Championship. If the Rams lose the game, another contest will take place 30 minutes after its conclusion to decide the title, as it is a double elimination tournament. The No. 4 seeded Rams upset No. 1 seeded UMass in an opening round game that ended the defending champions 32-game win streak.
