OWLS SET TO TAKE FLIGHT FOR KINGSTON, R.I. AND A-10 SOFTBALL CHAMPIONSHIPS

5.7.02 | Softball

The Temple softball team, under the direction of fifth-year head coach Rocci Pignoli, heads into its third straight Atlantic 10 Conference tournament with a 26-23 record and a 15-6 league mark. The Owls enter the four-team tournament as the No. 2 seed. This year's Championship will mark the Owls' 17th appearance in the post-season scramble since 1983. Temple has captured the crown once, sharing the title with Massachusetts in 1990.

After some tough road trips and rough weather early on, Temple has been on a roll since late March. The Owls have won 17 of their last 20 contests, including a school-record 11 game win streak from March 29-April 17 that saw Temple sweep three game sets with Saint Joseph's, La Salle and Fordham. The weekend of April 27-28, the Owls accomplished another feat, a three-game series sweep consisting of all shutouts, as the Owls defeated St. Bonaventure 8-0, 8-0 and 3-0.

On the mound, juniors Liz Naughton and Bari Lynn Pflueger have carried the load, combining to earn the decision in 17 straight games and in 24 of the last 25 contests. Since April, Naughton has an 8-2 record, including four complete game shutouts.

Pflueger, a Mid-Atlantic Region All-American in 2001, has also made her presence felt at the plate. She set Temple's single-season RBI record by knocking in 42 runs during regular season play, obliterating the former mark of 32 set by Angel Prinos in 1993. Sophomores Katie Weigle and Lynsey Grace are also on the verge of setting Temple single-season offensive records.
