TEMPLE FOOTBALL WELCOMES NEWCOMERS
8.2.02 | Football
The newcomers take the field for the first time tomorrow (Saturday, August 3, 2002) at 8:45 a.m. and again at 5:00 p.m. The Owls will hold three, two-a-day practices with the newcomers from Saturday thru Monday at the Geasey Field site located behind McGonigle Hall on 15th Street. Practices are scheduled to begin at 8:45 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. all three days.
"Initially with the newcomers, we try to evaluate where they are from a physical standpoint," said Wallace. "We also throw a lot at them mentally, to see how they grasp our systems. Then when the varsity reports, we start over. The idea is to give the newcomers something of an appetizer those first three days before the main course begins. What I like about the beginning of camp is that it gives the coaching staff a chance to really get to know the new guys. We spend a lot of time with them. It helps us get a better idea of what type of people we have brought into the program."
Returning players are scheduled to check in between 1:00-4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 6. Temple holds its annual football media day at the Edberg Olson Hall facility on Wednesday (2:30 p.m.) before having its first, full-squad practice on Thursday morning (August 8) at 7:00 a.m.
"We are very excited to get started," said Wallace. "Our players have worked extremely hard since the conclusion of last season. Coming off of two wins gave us additional momentum in the off-season. (New Offensive Coordinator) Dave Brock did a great job implementing a new offense in the spring. On defense, we are developing a tradition of productive and aggressive football."
Temple hosts Richmond at 7:00 p.m. in a Thursday evening contest at Franklin Field on August 29 to open its 104th season of collegiate football.
