8.22.02 | Football

Temple senior Tanardo Sharps (Annapolis, Md./Mead HS/Fork Union MA) is one of 42 preseason candidates for the Doak Walker Award, presented annually to the nation's top running back. It's marks the third straight season Sharps has been selected as a candidate for the Award.

Sharps (5-11, 196) ranks fifth all-time at Temple with 1,993 career rushing yards and is second all-time with nine 100-yard rushing games. He has two career 203-yard rushing performances and the Owls have a 7-2 record in games in which he rushes for 100 yards. Sharps has a 5.3 yards-per-carry average over a 26-game collegiate career.

Sharps and West Virginia's Avon Cobourne are the only two running backs on the list hailing from the Big East Conference.

The SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will select eight semifinalists on November 19 and the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will vote on the winner in late November. The National Selection Committee consists of former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, print and electronic media members and selected representatives.

Former winners of the Doak Walker Award include Ron Dayne (1999), Ricky Williams (1998), Eddie George (1995) and Garrison Hearst (1992). Last season, BYU's Luke Staley captured the honor.

Temple, under the direction of fifth-year head coach Bobby Wallace, opens its 104th season of collegiate football with 7:00 p.m. contest versus Richmond at Franklin Field on Thursday, August 29.
