TEMPLE FOOTBALL VERSUS RICHMOND GAME NOTES

8.23.02 | Football

Temple opens its 104th season of collegiate football Thursday night versus Division I-AA opponent and Atlantic 10 Conference member Richmond. A Division I-A institution is permitted to play a Division I-AA school and have it count toward bowl consideration once every four years. The Owls, under the direction of fifth-year head coach Bobby Wallace, are coming off a their second consecutive 4-7 season. The Spiders, under the direction of eighth-year head coach Jim Reid, are looking to rebound from a 3-8 mark in 2001.

All seven of Temple's losses in 2001 were to teams that ended their respective seasons bowl eligible, with a combined .750 (63-21) winning percentage. Six received bowl invitations, with five earning victories. The Owls also played five teams that ended the season ranked in both the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Coaches polls, including eventual national champion Miami. The Big East Conference produced the best post-season winning percentage of any Bowl Championship Series Conference with a 4-1 mark (.800).

Temple will have a new look on both sides of the ball in 2002. On offense, the team operates out of a spread, no-huddle offense. The multiple formation system utilizes 12 positions and allows the Owls to exploit their talent at the skill positions. On defense, the Cherry & White utilizes a 4-2-5 formation, allowing the squad to exploit its team speed.

"Our goal has never changed," said Wallace when asked about his expectations for the 2002 season. "It is to have a winning season and go to a bowl. As far as my expectations, it's simply for this team to be a good as it can be. That's the only expectation I have ever had since I began coaching. I have never entered a season thinking a team will win a national championship, win four games, or seven. To be successful, we need to play hard, with confidence and not make mistakes."
