BETHLEHEM, PA - The Philadelphia Eagles today announced that they have signed rookie DT and former Owl Russell Newman to a one-year contract.

Newman becomes the third former Owl to have played under Bobby Wallace to sign with the Eagles this summer, joining FB Jason McKie (1998-01) and WR Carlos Johnson (1998-99). DE Raheem Brock (1998-01), who was drafted by the Eagles in April, is currently a member of the Indianapolis Colts.

In total, five members of Temple's 2001 football team are in NFL camps. DB Chonn Lacey (1998-01) is with the Baltimore Ravens and FB Harold Jackson (2000-01) is with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Newman (6-2, 280) originally walked onto the Temple football team in 1998 and went on to earn second team All-Big East honors as a junior. His 15 tackles for a loss that year tied for 9th all-time in the Big East record books. Last season, as a senior, registered 40 tackles (19 solo) and 10 hurries. His nine tackles for a loss included 2.5 sacks.

A four-year letterwinner, Newman appeared in 36 games (17 starts) and posted 106 tackles, including 28 tackles for a loss and 8 sacks. He also registered 25 hurries and four forced fumbles at Temple.
