Temple (1-2, 0-1) is coming off a 44-21 loss to No.1-ranked Miami at Franklin Field last Saturday. 33,169 fans were on hand, the most for an Owl home game since 38,410 saw Temple play Penn State at Franklin Field in 1994. Two Tanardo Sharps TD runs within a one minute span had the Owls trailing 21-14 late in the second quarter. Sharps carried 20 times for 68 yards on the day to move into fourth place in career rushing yardage at Temple with 2,277 yards. Two Willis McGahee third quarter scoring runs, however -two of four on the day - distanced the Hurricanes. Dan Klecko had four QBHs, 2.5 TFLs and sacked Ken Dorsey for a loss of four yards. Dorsey has been sacked four times in his career, three coming at the hands of the Temple defense. The 21 points were the most Temple scored against Miami in six years (1996, 26-57).
South Carolina (1-2, 0-1) is coming off a 13-7 loss to now eighth-ranked Georgia at home last Saturday. The loss dropped the Gamecocks below .500 for the first time since their winless 1999 season. USC fumbled twice inside the Georgia two yard-line, including one on a fourth-and-one at the two with 20 seconds remaining in the game. Corey Jenkins carried 17 times for 101 yards to lead the Gamecock offense. On the season, he is averaging 102.3 rushing yards per game.
Saturday night's game will mark the third meeting between Temple and Lou Holtz. At William & Mary, Holtz squared off against the Owls at Temple Stadium in 1969 and 1971. The Tribe defeated the Owls and head coach George Makris 7-6 on Sept. 27, 1969 to give Holtz his first victory as a collegiate head coach. In 1971, a Wayne Hardin-led Temple squad defeated William & Mary 17-13.
