IT'S DEJA VU ALL OVER AGAIN FOR WOMEN'S BASKETBALL IN LOSS TO GEORGE WASHINGTON

1.12.03 | Women's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple women's basketball team (5-9, 1-2 A-10) lost a heartbreaker to George Washington (8-5, 3-0 A-10) 59-57 in the closing seconds at the Liacouras Center on Sunday, January 12. If it seems these teams have been here before, they have. Last season the Colonials defeated the Owls 54-53 at the Smith Center on a last second shot by forward Anna Montanana. This season the venue was different but the player and the result were the same as Montanana scored the game winner with just four seconds remaining to seal the victory.

Freshman center Candice Dupree led Temple with a game-high tying 18 points. Senior Chrissy Cruz (11) and sophomore Cynthia Jordan (10) were the other Owls in double figures. Dupree also had a career-high six steals. Sophomore Ari Moore led Temple in rebounding with six boards.

Montanana led George Washington with 18 points and 14 rebounds. She was the only Colonial in double figures.

Temple won the steals battle 16-4 and forced 27 turnovers to George Washington's 15. However, the Owls were out rebounded 39-25. Temple shot just 16.7 percent in the first half and trailed by 10 at intermission. In the second half, the Owls turned up the defensive pressure and they shot 53 percent to turn the game into a battle.

Next up for Temple, a road trip to Massachusetts on January 16 for a showdown with the Minutewomen. Tip-off in 7:00 p.m.
