WOMEN'S BASKETBALL SNAPS STREAK WITH 64-51 A-10 WIN OVER RHODE ISLAND

PHILADELPHIA- The Temple women's basketball (5-8; 1-1 A-10) team snapped a seven game losing streak with a 64-51 win over Rhode Island (8-5; 0-2 A-10) on Thursday, afternoon January 9 at the Liacouras Center in front of a record crowd of 4,079 on "Staley School Day".
Sophomore Ari Moore led the Owls with a game-high 16 points, freshman Candice Dupree added 13 and senior Chrissy Cruz rounded out the double figure scorers with 10. The Rams had three players in double figures including Denise King with a team-high 12, Laurisa Ewert(11) and Amanda Mills(10).
The Owls never trailed in the game and were in control throughout the contest leading by as many as 13 in the first half after a Cruz fast break lay up with 4:32 remaining in the opening period. Temple held a 29-20 lead at intermission. The Owls took their largest lead with a Moore lay up with 8:28 left in the game put Temple up by 18.
Temple had a season high 20 steals and forced the Rams into 35 turnovers. Sophomore Cynthia Jordan led the Owls' steal brigade with five and Moore had four. The Owls shot (24-54) 44 percent from the field and held Rhode Island to (22-57) 39 percent from the field. The Owls held a distinct advantage at the free throw line attempting 24 (15-24) free throws compared to Rhode Island six (4-6).
Temple will next host George Washington (6-5;1-0 A-10) on Sunday, January 12 at 4 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN 2 and broadcast live on WZZD 990 AM.
