TEMPLE'S STALEY NAMED TO 2004 USA BASKETBALL SENIOR NATIONAL TEAM

10.10.03 | Women's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - Headlined by Temple University women's basketball coach, two-time Olympic gold medalist and WNBA All-Star, Dawn Staley, USA Basketball announced that seven veterans have been named as core members for the 2004 USA Basketball Women's Senior National Team, which is expected to represent the United States at the 2004 Olympic Games. Should Staley compete in the 2004 Olympics, she would join a very short list of U.S. women's basketball players to become three-time Olympians including Anne Donovan (1980, 1984, 1988), current teammate Lisa Leslie (1996, 2000, 2004) and Katrina McClain (1992, 1996, 2000). Teresa Edwards (1984, 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000) was a member of a record five different

Olympic teams.

"I think Lisa, myself... all those players who are multiple Olympians, they don't go into it thinking, 'I want to be a five-time Olympian' or 'I want to be a three-time Olympian,'" said Staley. "They do it because they love it and they love to represent their country. It is rewarding in knowing that your hard work has paid off in the form of Olympic competition."

Joining Staley on the 2004 USA Women's Senior National Team are Leslie, 2000 Olympic gold medalists and WNBA stars Delisha Milton-Jones (Los Angeles Sparks) and Katie Smith (Minnesota Lynx). 2002 World Champions and WNBA standouts Tamika Catchings (Indiana Fever) and Shannon Johnson (Connecticut Sun) are also on the team. Additionally, Tina Thompson of the WNBA's Houston Comets, a 2000 U.S. Olympic team alternate, has been selected as well. Van Chancellor, head coach of the WNBA's Houston Comets, will coach the 2004 USA National Team.
