Charlottesville, Va. - Temple women's basketball coach Dawn Staley made quite a name for herself as a player in a Virginia Cavaliers uniform. In fact, her number 24 jersey hangs from the rafters at University Hall. But Staley, a Philadelphia native will be on the visiting team sidelines when UVA tips off against Temple in the opener of the Cavalier Classic on Sunday, December 28 at 2:00 p.m.
Sophomore center Candice Dupree leads the Owls in scoring (19.1 ppg.), rebounding (7.3 rpg.), steals, (1.7 spg.), blocks (1.7 bpg.) and leads the Atlantic 10 Conference in field goal percentage (63.4 percent). Junior guard Cynthia Jordan, ironically a Virginia native leads Temple in assists (4.3 apg.) and tops the conference in assist/turnover ratio (2.5/1).
Senior guard Anna Prillaman is Virginia's top scoring threat at 11.6 points per contest. Cavaliers coach Debbie Ryan, who is in her 27th season at UVA coached Staley in college.
The game marks the first meeting between the two schools in women's basketball. It will not be broadcast in the Philadelphia area.
