WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TO PLAY GEORGIA STATE IN CAVALIER CLASSIC CONSOLATION
12.28.03 | Women's Basketball
In a weekend full of ironic matchups with Staley's celebrated return to her alma mater and junior guard Cynthia Jordan, a Chesapeake, Virginia native, leading the Owls with 19 points in defeat, Temple and Georgia State each sport an Olympic gold medal-winning point guard as its coach. Staley is a two-time gold medal-winning point guard who, as a member of the USA Basketball Senior National Team, will have an opportunity to win her third Olympic gold. Lady Panthers coach Lea Henry won Olympic gold in Los Angeles back in 1984 when Staley was a freshman in high school.
Temple (3-5) enters the game trying to halt a three-game losing streak. The Owls are paced by sophomore center Candice Dupree who leads Templs in scoring (18.8 ppg.), rebounding (6.6 rpg.) and is atop the Atlantic 10 Conference in field goal percentage (63.5 percent).
Georgia State is 4-3 on the season and is paced by junior guard Patechia Hartman (15.6 ppg.). Senior center Yvette Tisdale (10.1 ppg.) leads the Lady Panthers in rebounding (8.1 rpg.).
The game will mark the first meeting between the two schools in women's basketball. The game will not be broadcast in the Philadelphia area.
