WOMEN'S BASKETBALL FALLS TO XAVIER

2.13.03 | Women's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA - The Temple women's basketball team (8-14, 4-7 A-10) lost to Xavier (16-7, 8-4 A-10) 64-56 on February 13. Despite the loss, the Owls remain tied for second place in the A-10 East.

Sophomore Ari Moore led Temple with a game-high 18 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Fellow sophomore Cynthia Jordan (12) and senior Stacey Smalls (10) were the other Owls who scored in double figures.

Reetta Piipari led Xavier with 17 points. Tara Boothe (15) and Amy Waugh (14) also scored in double digits for the Musketeers. Kristy Wallner led all rebounders with 11 boards.

In a game where Temple held Xavier scoreless from the field in the final 7:50, free throw shooting would play a key role in the outcome. The Musketeers were 23-29 from the free throw line while the Owls were 8-10. Temple won the steals (8-3) and turnover (TU 9, XU 16) battles but the Owls were out-rebounded 34-27 and shot just 2-14 from three-point range.

Next up for the Owls, another home contest against Dayton on Saturday, February 15. The game is the second half of a men's/women's doubleheader and tips-off at 6:00 p.m. following the nationally-televised men's game against N.C. State, scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
