3.26.03 | Softball
In the first game, Temple jumped out to an early lead on the Hawks. In the bottom of the first with no outs, singles by Katie Weigle and Jenny Cochran put St. Joseph's in early trouble. The Hawks almost escaped the jam, retiring two of the next three batters without giving up a run, but a two-out double down the left field line by Chrissy Harris scored Weigle and Cochran and gave the Owls a 2-0 edge. St. Joseph's answered back in the top of the second, scoring a pair of runs and evening the game at two runs apiece.
The Owls struck again in the second inning, scoring four runs on three hits, two errors and one walk. Temple held the Hawks and the 6-2 to advantage, until the top of the fifth inning when Megan Richardson, who reached on an error, was brought home on a triple by Alicia Cunic. With Cunic on third, a single by Jill Clementi cut Temple's lead to 6-4.
St. Joseph's added one run in the top of the seventh, but the Owls held on and notched the win,6-5. Vicky Grasham, who struck out seven Hawks, gets the win for Temple, improving her record 4-5. Liz Naughton picks up her first save of the season in one inning of work.
The Hawks and Owls will resume play in the second game tomorrow at 3 p.m. at Erny Field. St. Joseph's holds a 3-2 advantage over the Owls, and game will pick up in the bottom of the third inning.
