SOFTBALL CRUSHES GEORGE WASHINGTON, 12-1 AND 11-1 IN SUNDAY DOUBLEHEADER

3.31.03 | Softball

The Temple University softball team (14-14, 4-0 A-10) defeated George Washington yesterday in both games of a doubleheader that was played in cold, rainy conditions. Temple assured that the games would be short and sweet, run ruling the Colonials in both contests, 12-1 and 11-1, respectively. The Owls squeezed in both games, recognizing their importance in a conference schedule that is five games shorter than last year.

In the first game, senior Liz Naughton (Olyphant, PA/Mid-Valley) took the mound against the Colonials. Naughton held GW to a lowly .059 batting average while allowing one hit, one run and striking out seven. The Owls posted 15 hits in the contest, led by Katie Weigle (Naples, FL/Naples) who had three hits, and Jess Rohn (Nazareth, Pa/Nazareth), Jenny Cochran (Thousand Oaks, CA/Thousand Oaks), Lynsey Grace (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford), and Alexis Gary (San Diego, CA/Mt. Carmel), who each contributed two hits. Naughton improves to 7-3 on the year.

Kim Watkins (Earlville, PA/Boyertown) faced the Colonials in the second game, picking up right where Naughton left off. Watkins allowed one run and three hits, while striking out five in notching her first win of the season. Temple posted 10 hits in the second game, however the Colonials handed six walks to the Owls. Chrissy Harris (New Lisbon, NJ/Shawnee) chipped in two hits and three RBIs, while eight other Owls each posted one hit. Freshman Lauren Evans (Mission Viejo, CA/Capistrano Valley) took GW pitcher Jennifer Lawrence deep for the first home run of her collegiate career, while knocking in three runs. Freshman Dana Richards (Wyoming, PA/Mid-Valley) contributed another extra-base hit, doubling in her only at-bat of the game.

The Owls travel to New England this weekend to face the Rhode Island Rams on Friday, April 4, in a doubleheader at 1:30 in the afternoon. They will then head to Amherst, Massachusetts to take on the defending conference champion UMass Minutewomen on Sunday, April 6 at noon, in what could be a preview of this year's tournament championship.
