NAUGHTON'S TWO-HITTER NOT ENOUGH TO BEAT FORDHAM AS SOFTBALL FALLS IN FIRST GAME OF DOUBLEHEADER
4.25.03 | Softball
In the first game, the Owls out-hit the Rams, 8-2, but could not get things done in clutch situations, stranding six runners on base. The Rams' only run came in the second inning off of a single and two Temple errors. Temple posted a 2.96 batting average in the game, and Naughton held Fordham to a lowly .074 average, throwing all seven innings, allowing two hits, no earned runs, and striking out seven batters.
The loss brings Naughton's record to 8-6 on the season.
Grasham took the mound in game two, and continued to dominate the Fordham lineup.
Temple struck first in the game, scoring three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Bari Pflueger (Allentown, PA/Parkland) led off the inning with a single and was moved to second on a sacrifice by catcher Alexis Gary (San Diego, CA/Mt. Carmel). A Chrissy Harris (New Lisbon, NJ/Shawnee) double followed by an Aida Esquer (Chula Vista, CA/Bonita Vista) single and a Lauren Evans (Mission Viejo, CA/Capistrano Valley) single gave the Owls the three run advantage.
Temple tacked on two more runs in the fourth when Pflueger started the inning with a single. Gary then drilled a ball over the outfield fence, her second home run of the season, giving the Owls a 5-0 lead.
Temple added its final two runs of the game in the fifth on consecutive singles by Jenny Cochran (Thousand Oaks, CA/Thousand Oaks), Lynsey Grace (New Bedford, MA/New Bedford), Pflueger and Gary.
The Rams scored all four of their runs off of relief pitcher Katherine White (Laguna Niguel, CA/Santa Margarita) in the fifth and sixth innings. After allowing a double and home run in the fifth and reducing the Owls' lead to three, Grasham returned to the mound to finish the game.
In her 5.1 innings on the mound Grasham allowed only two hits, no runs, no walks, and struck out seven Rams in earning the win.
Temple was lead by designated player Pflueger, who was 4-6, and third baseman Lauren Evans, who was 3-6 on the day.
The Owls conclude their regular season on Saturday, May 3 when they visit the La Salle Explorers. The first game is set to begin at noon.
