NEW YORK JETS SELECT TEMPLE'S DAVE YOVANOVITS IN SEVENTH ROUND OF NFL DRAFT

4.27.03 | Football

With the 23rd pick in the seventh round (237th overall) of the 2003 National Football League Draft, the New York Jets selected Temple's Dave Yovanovits (Stanhope, N.J./Hopatcong HS). The offensive tackle becomes the 27th Owl to be chosen in the NFL Draft since 1970 and the second this year following defensive tackle Dan Klecko (fourth round, New England).

Yovanovits is the second Temple player to be drafted by the Jets since 1970. Former Owl DT Joe Klecko was selected by the club in the sixth round of the 1977 draft and earned four Pro Bowl trips at three different positions.

Yovanovits (6-3, 300) was a four-year starter under head coach Bobby Wallace at Temple and twice received the "Top Hog" award as the team's most valuable offensive lineman. He played every snap in 41 of 45 career games while making 43 starts. A team captain, Yovanovits was the cornerstone of an offensive line that helped pave the way for running back Tanardo Sharps to gain 1,267 rushing yards in 2002.

A 2002 preseason Second Team All-Big East selection by Lindy's, Yovanovits has also made a name for himself in the weight room at Temple, earning the team's 2001 John Rienstra Award for excellence in off-season conditioning.

Yovanovits arrived in Owl Country in the fall of 1999 weighing a sparse 240 pounds. He proceeded to gain 23 pounds in preseason camp and went on to play every snap at tackle for Temple as a true freshman.
