MASSACHUSETTS DEFEATS TEMPLE, 1-0, TO CLAIM ATLANTIC 10 SOFTBALL CROWN
5.10.03 | Softball
The 2-1 Owls needed to win back to back games to claim the title against the undefeated Minutewomen, but Massachusetts needed only one win to claim victory. The only run of the game came in the bottom of the fifth inning when Massachusetts shortstop Emily Robustelli singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Hilary Puglia. Brandi Cross then lined a pitch into deep left center field which scored Robustelli from second. The hit, one of seven allowed by Temple starter Vicky Grasham (Tucson, AZ/Salpointe) proved to be the difference in the game.
A Jessica Rohn (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) single, a Katie Weigle (Naples, FL/Naples) single, and a Lauren Evans (Mission Viejo, CA/Capistrano Valley) double were the only hits that the Owls could muster off of Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Year Kaila Holtz.
In six innings on the mound, Grasham allowed seven hits, one run, one walk, and struck out four batters in her final game of the year. She finishes the season with a 9-7 record and a 2.72 ERA.
Two Owls received all tournament honors for their performances on the week. Junior catcher Alexis Gary (San Diego, CA/Mt. Carmel) finished the tournament 3-12 at the plate with one RBI. Junior centerfielder Katie Weigle was 5-8 with two runs and two RBI in the four games.
The Owls conclude their 2003 campaign with a 22-20 overall record and a 10-4 mark in conference play.
