SOFTBALL DEFEATS ST. JOSEPH'S, 2-1, IN OPENING ROUND OF ATLANTIC 10 TOURNAMENT
5.8.03 | Softball
Temple starter Liz Naughton (Olyphant, PA/Mid Valley) allowed only one run in four innings of work on the mound. In the top of the third inning, Hawk centerfielder Megan Richardson reached base on an error and advanced to second on a stolen base. A single by catcher Alicia Cunic scored Richardson and gave St. Joseph's the one run lead.
The Owls evened the score in the bottom half of the inning when Katie Weigle (Naples, FL/Naples) beat out an infield grounder and scored on a single by Bari Lynn Pflueger (Allentown, PA/Parkland).
The score remained tied through the bottom of the seventh, but the Owls ended the game before it went into extra innings.
Lauren Evans (Mission Viejo, CA/Capistrano Valley) led the inning off with a single through the left side of the infield. Evans was replaced on the bases by a speedy Nicole Undercuffler (Norristown, PA/Norristown), who advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jenny Cochran (Thousand Oaks, CA/Thousand Oaks). With two outs, Undercuffler left second base in an attempt to steal third, but an errant throw by catcher Cunic got passed the coverage at third, and gave Undercuffler enough time to safely reach home, and sealed the win for the Owls.
Closer Vicky Grasham (Tucson, AZ/Salpointe) earns the win, which improves her record to 9-5 on the season. In three innings, Grasham allowed one hit, no runs, one walk, and struck out three batters.
The Owls prepare for tomorrow's game against Massachusetts, which is scheduled to begin at noon. The winner of tomorrow's game advances to the tournament final, while the loser will face the winner of tomorrow's game between Fordham and St. Joseph's.
