CHARLESTON TOPS TEMPLE, 4-1, IN WOMEN'S SOCCER

Charleston, S.C. - Sydney Strong scored two goals to lead the College of Charleston women's soccer team to a 4-1 victory over the Temple Owls in the final game of the Quality Inn & Suites Classic on Sunday afternoon at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, SC.

The Cougars improve to 1-1 on the year while Temple falls to 0-2.

Charleston out-shot Temple, 12-0, in the first half but could not get one past the net. The Owls broke the scoreless deadlock eight minutes into the second half with a goal by Katie Louth with an assist by Trish Dalton. Charleston responded immediately as Strong sent a penalty kick into the back of the net less than a minute later. Strong then scored again two minutes later off an assist by Kristin Rhyne to put the Cougars ahead for good.

Freshman Caroline Wertis and sophomore Brennana McCord picked up insurance goals for Charleston to account for the final score.

The Cougars led the offensive effort with a 25-4 advantage in shots. They also had 12 corner kicks with the Owls having none.

Sophomore Jackie Mauro and freshman Elizabeth Tarasevich again split time in goal for the Owls. Mauro held the Cougars scoreless while making four saves in the first half. Tarasevich, who came in at the start of the second half, made three saves while allowing four goals. Emily Brenner allowed one goal while recording one save for Charleston.

Temple returns home to host Lehigh on Wednesday (4:00 p.m.) in its home opener at Temple Stadium.
