TEMPLE'S YAZID JACKSON NAMED TO AFCA GOOD WORKS TEAM
9.17.03 | Football
"We are very proud of Yazid," said Temple head coach Bobby Wallace. "It is not very often that a young person posesses both the work ethic and perspective that he displays off the field. Yazid understands the importance of people and the magnitude that positive relationships can have. It is a real tribute to his family, his friends and our football program to have him honored on this team."
Jackson has joined with former high school teammate and current Notre Dame linebacker Brandon Hoyte to initiate an alumni group of former Sayreville WMHS student-athletes to counsel and provide advice and direction to current Sayreville student-athletes in areas of academic and personal development. He also volunteering his time at Mount Arrat Missionary Baptist Church in Jamesburg, N.J., working as a mentor and youth counselor with the Reverend Charlie Bates, Jr. Additionally, Jackson participated in a community clean-up of Martin Luther King HS, located in Philadelphia, in the summer of 2003 and was a member of the 2003 Shore Tour, a collection of players, coaches and support personnel that traveled to the Jersey Shore in an effort to make personal connections with fans and to promote Owls' football.
Jackson visited ill children at Temple University Children's Hospital, along with a contingent of teammates, this past summer and is an active participant in Temple Teammates, a community service program conducted by the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics to raise consciousness and awareness in young people throughout the Greater Philadelphia area on aspects of leadership, positive character development and high ethical standards.
In two starts this season, Jackson has 17 tackles (10 solo) and one pass break-up. In 2002, he started all 12 games at cornerback, totalling 65 stops (48 solo), three interceptions, seven pass break-ups and two fumble recoveries.
Jackson is the second student-athlete under Wallace to be cited on the AFCA Good Works Team. In 2000, senior linebacker LeVar Talley earned mention on the squad.
