9.28.03 | Women's Tennis
PHILADELPHIA - Temple head coach Tracy Tooke had her 2003-04 women's tennis team open in two separate invitationals over the weekend. The Owls used a split squad and competed at the 7th Annual Cissie Leary Invitational hosted by Penn and the Princeton Women's Tennis Fall Invitational.
Returning Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Year Danira Penic had the best showing of all Owl competitors, winning three matches before falling to #1 seed Alice Persu of Penn in a thrilling three-set quarterfinal match, 2-6, 6-4, 7-5. Penic was the eight-seed in the highly-competitive tournament.
Ana Maslesa, the only other Owl competing at the Cissie Leary Invitational, won one singles match at the event.
At Princeton, Jen Goeta, playing in the A-1 singles competition, was the only one of five Owls to reach the semifinal round. Lauren Verrall (A-2 singles), Laura Seiverling (B-1 singles), Jackie Sy (B-2 singles) and Zabrina Noyes (C-1 singles) all were eliminated in the quarterfinal round.
