Joining Britney Jordan in double figures were sophomore center Candice Dupree (14 points, 11 rebounds, five blocks), who recorded her second straight double-double and fifth of the season and Ari Moore (10 points, seven rebounds). Junior guard Cynthia Jordan added nine points and three assists for the Owls.
Senior guard Erin Brady led Saint Joseph's (11-5, 6-1 A-10) with a game-high 21 points. Fellow senior Irina Krasnoshiok came off the bench to score 17 points and grab 13 boards for a double-double.
Temple held a slim 26-24 halftime lead and the game was back and forth in the second stanza with the Owls holding their largest lead of six points with 3:10 remaining in regulation. The Hawks would not die and surged to tie the score, 55-55 at the end of 40 minutes. In the overtime, points were a precious few as Temple outscored Saint Joseph's 7-6 and gained the margin of victory on a lay-up by Dupree with 11 seconds on the clock.
Dupree, the conference leader in field goal percentage at 61.8 percent coming into the game, was an uncharacterstic 4-15 from the field but she managed to keep herself involved enough to score when it mattered the most.
"It was a good win for us," said coach Dawn Staley. "People forget that we are a young team and to get a win against a senior-laden team like Saint Joseph's is huge. We are growing up quickly when we can win in settings like this."
The Owls, who have just finished a stretch of four games in eight days, will next host Massachusetts on Thursday, January 29 at the Liacouras Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
