AMHERST, MA. - Freshman Britt Canfield scored her second goal of the game in the 99th minute to lift UMass to a 3-2 overtime victory over Temple in a women's soccer match played on a sunny Sunday afternoon at Rudd Field. Temple falls to 3-7 overall and 0-3 in the Atlantic 10 play while UMass improves to 3-6 overall, 1-2 in the league.
Canfield finished off a drop pass from sophomore Elizabeth Weinsten with 1:18 left in the first overtime, as she shot it into the low right corner beating Temple goalkeeper Jackie Mauro. Canfield had also scored the game-tying goal with 24:04 left in the second half. Canfield knocked in a loose ball off a crazy scramble near the right goalpost to tie the game at 2-2.
UMass dominated the game as it outshot the Owls, 32-7, including 18-4 in the second half. Mauro was sensational all game, keeping the Owls in the contest with an incredible 13 saves.
Temple opened the scoring as Courtney Eaton served in a free kick from 30 yards which deflected off the crossbar and into the goal. UMass answered with 2:03 left in the first half as Lindsay Fairweather took a perfectly slotted pass from Tina Rodriguez and beat Mauro from three yards out.
The Owls regained the lead as Melissa Foley scored from inside the top of the box, about six yards away just 4:56 into the second half. That set the stage for Canfield's heroics to lead UMass to the win.
Temple returns home to host Xavier (Oct. 8) and Dayton (Oct. 10) at Ambler Field.
