JOHNSON CITY, TN -- Temple begins its Thanksgiving weekend tour of Tennessee with Friday's visit to East Tennessee State. The Owls (1-1) are coming off a 65-51 loss at the hands of #2 LSU on Tuesday at the Liacouras Center. Sparked by the play of freshman Ashley Morris, TU went on an 11-4 run midway through the second half to draw within three points of the Lady Tigers with 7:34 to play. Morris' second triple of the run cut the deficit to 48-45, but the Owls ran out of gas and dropped their home opener. Senior Cynthia Jordan and junior Candice Dupree each netted 14 points for the Cherry and White. The game will be broadcast by the Buccaneer Sports Network on the internet via http://www.etsubucs.com/info/broadcasts/.
Dupree leads the way for TU with 19.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game to pace four Owls in double figures. She is followed by sophomore Kamesha Hairston (11.5 ppg.), Jordan (10.5), and senior Ari Moore (10.0).
The Owls will travel across the state to face off with #1 Tennessee on Sunday at 3 p.m.
East Tennessee State (2-1) hasn't left the state in wins over Tennessee Tech (81-77) and Tusculum (77-61) and a loss to Tennessee State (62-56). Tiffani Mayes paced the Buccaneers with a 24-point, 15-rebound performance against Tusculum. The senior had posted a double-double in the first 14 minutes of play, while B.J. Banjo and Holly Moring each scored 13.
Mayes is averaging 17.7 points and 9.7 rebounds per game in the early going. Banjo adds 16.3 ppg. for head coach Karen Kemp.
