WOMEN'S BASKETBALL TO TAKE ON MARYLAND-EASTERN SHORE THURSDAY NIGHT

PHILADELPHIA- Temple's women's basketball team (6-3) returns home to take on the Lady Hawks of Maryland-Eastern Shore (2-7) Thursday night at 7 p.m. in the Owl's last contest of 2004.
Junior Candice Dupree scored game-highs of 23 points and 15 rebounds, two short of her career high, to lead Temple over Villanova (6-3), 64-57, on December 21st at Villanova's Pavilion. Dupree was a monster on defense, grabbing 13 defensive rebounds and swatting away three shots on her way to her third double-double of the season. The contest was also a battle for sole possession of the Big 5 title. Going into the game, Villanova was 3-0 in the Big 5 and a win over Temple (2-0 Big 5) would have crowned it the early winner. However, Dupree, who led four Owls in double figures, squashed all hopes of the Wildcats winning the title out right. Dupree was named the Big 5 Player of the Week for her efforts. Kamesha Hairston, who was second on the team with 12 points, did a tremendous job on Villanova leading scorer Liad Suez. Hairston allowed Suez to take just one shot, which she missed. Ari Moore and Cynthia Jordan rounded out the double-figure scoring with 10 points a piece.
Dupree leads the way for TU with 14.8 points and 9.6 rebounds per game to pace four Owls in double figures. She is followed by Jordan (12.8 ppg, 4.6 rpg), Hairston (10.7 ppg) and Moore (10.4 ppg).
The Owls continue their home stand on Sunday, January 2nd when they take on the Pirates of Hampton University at 2:00 p.m.
UMES is coming off a 60-48 loss to Bucknell on December 20th. The Hawks were led by freshman Kristi Veltkamp's career-high 10 points and six block shots.
Maryland-Eastern Shore is led by Tony Kennedy , who is averaging a team-best 9.9 points per game. Jamila Griffith is contributing 8.9 points per game and a team-leading 5.9 rebounds per game. Erica Bennet is tops in assists with 24.
