DUPREE NETS 27 TO LEAD TEMPLE OVER MARYLAND-EASTERN SHORE, 77-53

12.30.04 | Women's Basketball

PHILADELPHIA--Candice Dupree scored 27 points in 24 minutes of play, including 15 in the first half to lead the Temple Owls, 77-53, over the visiting Maryland-Eastern Shore Lady Hawks on Thursday night at the Liacouras Center.  The Owls are now 7-3 on the season, while the Lady Hawks fall to 2-8.

UMES actually jumped out to an early lead in the beginning of the contest off of outstanding play by Kristi Veltkamp.  The freshman scored six points in the opening five minutes to allow the Lady Hawks to take a 13-8 lead.  Dupree, however, was also a one woman show, scoring 11 of the Owls' 13 points in the first seven minutes.  It was a jumper by Dupree at 14:21 that sparked a 16-0 Temple run that allowed the Owls to take a 24-13 lead midway through the first half.  Cynthia Jordan and Jennifer Owens hit three straight treys to facilitate the large gap.  Chikwue Okaro broke UMES' scoring drought with a lay-up at 11:30 but it proved to be a fluke, as the Owls scored five more points to build a 13-point lead.  Temple continued to dominate, taking a 41-28 advantage into the half.

TU's lead continued to swell in the second stanza, as they held the Lady Hawks scoreless for the first five minutes of the half.  Dupree scored ten of Temple's 14 points to build a 31 point lead at 15:29.  By the ten minute mark, Temple led by 34 points and never looked back as they took their four-straight contest, 77-53.

Dupree added game-highs of nine rebounds and four steals to an already impressive performance.  The junior missed just one shot in the entire game, going 11-12 from the field and 5-5 from the free throw line.  Jordan added 13 points and eight assists to move into tenth place all-time on TU's career assist list.

Ashley Chase led the Lady Hawks with 11 points, while Veltkamp and Toni Kennedy chipped in with 10 a piece.

Temple continues its non-conference home stand with a match-up against Hampton on January 2 at 2 p.m.
