SOFTBALL DROPS TWO IN OPENING DAY OF USF TOURNAMENT

Tulsa senior Heather Hiar led the Hurricane attack with three hits, two runs, and two RBIs. Hiar opened the first inning for Tulsa with a double and eventually scored the game's first run on a fielder's choice.
The Hurricanes scored big in the second inning, sending four runners across the plate on four hits. Freshman Lindsay Galloway singled to center to start the inning. The next two batters, junior Holly Reynolds and Hiar each singled to load the bases. Temple's starting pitcher freshman Richelle Villescas hit the next batter, junior Stacey Walkingstick, to score Tulsa's second run. With the bases loaded, junior Stephanie Sliepen doubled to left center and sent two runners home.
In the bottom of the fourth Temple's designated hitter, freshman Makeala Compton hit a solo homer for the Owls' lone run of the game.
Tulsa scored two more runs in fifth and earned the win on a run-rule victory (eight-run lead after five innings).
Hurricanes pitcher Lindsey Pyer earned the win for Tulsa. Pyer allowed four hits, struck-out five batters, and recorded no walks.
Temple's losing hurler Katherine White pitched two innings, allowed six runs on seven hits, and posted one strike out.
In the second game of the day against Hofstra, the Owls picked up their offense with seven hits on 29 at-bats. Temple jumped on the board first, scoring in the first and third innings. Hofstra scored three runs in the top of third to take the lead. In the bottom of the fourth the Owls tied up the game with one run. Hofstra took the lead in the fifth, scoring a run on throwing error and then sealed the victory with three more runs in the seventh.
Junior reliever Adrienne Clark earned the win, pitching four innings in relief of starter Alexis Alcantara. Clark allowed no runs and only one hit.
On the mound for the Owls, Villescas took the loss after pitching five innings. Villescas allowed four runs on eight hits and struck out three batters. White pitched two inning in relief, allowing four runs on four hits.
The Owls are back in action against Maryland at the USF tournament on February 21.
