UMASS EDGES TEMPLE, 4-3, IN WOMEN'S TENNIS

AMHERST, MA -- The Temple University women's tennis team dropped a heartbreaker to Atlantic 10 Conference rival Massachusetts on Friday, 4-3. The Minutewomen began the match by taking the doubles point but it went down to the final set of the final singles match before a winner was decided at the Bay Road Tennis Center.

In #1 doubles, UMass' Jenny Munroe and Stephanie Price defeated Danira Penic and Ana Maslesa, 8-5 to start a UMass sweep. Christine Liehr and Dorothy Iwanowicz then defeated Temple's Jennifer Goeta and Laura Sieverling 8-5 in the #2 slot, while Susan Hyams and Sasha Edelstein closed out the #3 doubles with an 8-1 victory over Lara Ercegovic and Lauren Verrall.

In singles Penic, defeated Price, 6-1, 6-3 to even the score at 1-1. Iwanowicz then took down Verrall in the #4 singles, but Lara Ercegovic topped Jana Bartoloni,6-3, 6-2, to tie the match at 2-2. The #6 singles then saw Hyams defeat Goeta, making the match score 3-2 in favor of the Minutewomen. Maslesa then evened it again at 3-3 with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Edelstein. After winning the first set 6-0 at number three, Sieverling dropped the second set, 6-3 to Liehr. The final set saw Liehr take a 7-5 victory, giving the match win to the Minutewomen.

Temple, 1-3, next travels to Harvard for a Saturday match.
