COLUMBIA TOPS TEMPLE, 6-1, IN WOMEN'S TENNIS
2.28.04 | Women's Tennis
Senior Danira Penic won at number one singles, defeating Milena Kachar, 61-6-3. She also teamed with sophomore Ana Maslesa for an 8-6 win at number one doubles over Kachar and Christina Kim. That was the only good news for Temple coach Tracy Tooke.
Maslesa, playing at number two singles, lost a tough first set to Dasha Leonyuk (7-5) and then was forced to retire from play due to illness. Molly Condit downed Jennifer Goeta at number three singles, 6-0, 6-1. Goeta, who normally plays five singles, was forced to move up due to the absence of Lauren Verrall (ill).
Lara Ercegovic then injured her ankle during play at number four singles and retired after the third game of the first set. Miriam Rahali downed Laura Seiverling, 6-3, 6-0 at the number five position and Eunice Chao closed out the match with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Jackie Sy at six singles.
Temple did almost take the doubles as Sy and Goeta lost in a tie-breaker, 9-8 (3) to Leonyuk and Kristin Martinez. Rahali and Chao easily bested Seiverling and Ercegovic, 8-1, at third doubles to take the point for Columbia.
The Owls, which host UMBC on Sunday at Arthur Ashe (7:30 p.m.), fall to 1-5 on the season. Columbia improves to 4-2.
