OWLS FALL TO MAINE AND SOUTH FLORIDA IN SPRING BREAK TOURNAMENT

With Maine's Brittany Cheney on first, teammate Jessica Brady homered down the left field line to drive in two runs and put the Blackbears up 2-0 in the first inning.
Temple attempted to respond in the third inning with singles from senior Katie Weigle and sophomore Lauren Evans. Sophomore Jessica Rohn led off the inning with a walk. Weigle and Evans both singled to load the bases for the Owls. Senior Alexis Gary drove in Temple's only run of the game with an infield grounder to first.
In the top of the fourth Maine notched one more run to increase its lead over the Owls. Lauren Dulkis doubled to left field and advanced to third on a Shannon Sirois grounder to first. Lyndsey Tibbetts singled up the middle to score Dulkis. The Blackbears ended the inning and the game up 3-1.
Charged with the loss, freshman Richelle Villescas pitched a complete game for the Owls. In seven innings on the mound, Villescas allowed five hits and struck out four batters.
For the Blackbears, Jennifer Merchant earned the win. Merchant allowed seven hits and registered four strike outs.
Coming off its first ever Speedline Invitational Tournament Championship over the weekend, South Florida invoked the run rule and defeated Temple, 12-1, in five innings in the Temple's second game.
With consecutive doubles from freshmen Makeala Compton and Adrienne Repsher, the Owls managed to score their lone run in the top of the second. Compton nailed a double down the left field line and Repsher followed with a double to left field to drive in the Owls only run of the game.
Starting pitcher Villescas was charged with the loss for the Owls. In one and two-thirds innings on the mound Villescas allowed six hits and stuck out one batter. Sophomore reliever Katherine White pitched two and one-third innings, allowing five hits and striking out four batters.
The Owls, 8-11, begin play in the Plant City Tournament on March 12 when they take-on St. Francis (N.Y.) at 10:00 a.m. and Boston University at 2:00 p.m.
