CLEARWATER, FL -- The Temple University softball team dropped its first two games of the Speedline Invitational Tournament on March 4 to Northwestern and No. 14 Oregon. Temple fell 2-0 to Northwestern and 6-2 to Oregon.

In her second shut-out victory of the season, Northwestern freshman pitcher Eileen Canney led the Wildcats to their 12th straight win. Temple struggled offensively, sending only 23 batters to face Canney.

Temple pitcher freshman Richelle Villescas allowed only five hits, but gave up four crucial walks in the first and sixth innings. In the first inning Villescas walked the bases loaded. Northwestern's senior Eryn Manahan took advantage and singled to right, scoring junior Erin Mobley.

In the sixth inning Villescas walked sophomore Kristen Amegin. Freshman Elizabeth Piatt replaced Amegin as a pinch runner and advanced to second on a Manahan single. Senior J.C. Kira knocked a single into left field to score Piatt.

Temple recorded only one hit, a Lynsey Grace double in the bottom of the seventh.

Oregon jumped on the board early, scoring its first run in the bottom of the first. Temple pitcher Kathering White began the game by walking senior Jenn Poore. On a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Breanne Sabol, Poore moved to second. The next batter, junior Ashley Richards, reached first on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Sophomore Beth Boskovich singled up the middle, sending Richards home on the play.

In the third inning Poore led off with a single to right field. Two batters later Poore scored on a Boskovich single.

With four Temple errors and three Oregon singles, the Ducks crossed the plate four times in the fourth to increase their lead to 6-0. Freshman Kayleen Hudson led off the inning with a single to initiate scoring drive. Junior Erin Goodell reached second on a Temple error, advancing Hudson to third. On the next at-bat Jamie singled up the middle, sending Goodall and Hudson home. Poore singled and advanced to second on the throw. With runners on second and third, Temple reliever Kim Watkins walked Sabol to load the bases. Boskovich reached first on error by Temple third baseman Melissa McCartney and advanced to second on shortstop Aida Esquer's error. The error sent both Jaime and Poore home for the final two scores of the inning.

The Owls finally scored two runs in the seventh inning. Senior catcher Alexis Gary and freshman first baseman Adrienne Repsher both walked. Lauren Evans singled up the middle to send Gary home and Repsher to third base. Repsher scored on second baseman Goodell's error.

For Oregon sophomore Amy Harris was awarded the win, while Temple sophomore Katherins White got the loss.

The Owls, 2-8, will take on Jacksonville and Coastal Carolina tomorrow afternoon in the second day of tournament action.
