WOMEN'S BASKETBALL SWATS AWAY SPIDERS, 64-62 TO ADVANCE TO A-10 CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
3.7.04 | Women's Basketball
PHILADELPHIA - The Temple women's basketball team knows how to win close games. And that knowledge would come in handy in the Owls' 64-62 over Richmond in the Atlantic 10 Championship Semifinal on March 7 at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse on the campus of Saint Joseph's University. With the win, Temple (20-9) advances to the A-10 Championship Final where it will face the Hawks (20-9), who upset West number one seed George Washington, 70-57, on Monday, March 8. The title game, which will be televised on ESPN2 is scheduled for a 5:00 p.m. tip-off.
Sophomore center Candice Dupree led the Owls with game-highs of 20 points, 13 rebounds and four blocked shots. Junior guard Cynthia Jordan added 11 points and dished out five assists while junior forward Ari Moore chipped in with 10 points, two assists and a huge blocked shot with 12 seconds remaining to seal the win.
Saona Chapman led a quartet of double figure scorers for Richmond with 17 points. Kate Flavin (16 points), Christina Campion (14 points, team-high nine rebounds) and Amber Goppert (13 points) also notched double digits for the Spiders.
The game, which featured 16 lead changes and seven ties, was a battle throughout. Temple held a slim 31-30 lead at the half and edged Richmond 33-32 in the second stanza. The Spiders (20-9)held the advantage in steals (6-3), rebounds (39-37), assists (16-14) and turnovers (UR 10, TU 11). The difference in the game just may have been three-point shooting as Temple was 3-8 while Richmond was 1-5.
So, for the second time in two years, it will be an all-Philly A-10 Championship Final. The Owls defeated the Hawks, 63-58 in the 2002 Atlantic 10 Championship to claim the first-ever A-10 women's basketball crown in school history.
