TEMPLE TOPS PENN, 4-0, IN SOFTBALL
4.7.04 | Softball
Limited to just one hit, a third inning bunt single by Jess Rohn over the first five innings by freshman Lindsey Parmer (5-6), Rohn led of the bottom of the sixth by reaching base via a fielding error by Penn shortstop Jen Nichols. Katie Weigle then hit a slow grounder to third for an infield single to put runners at first and second with no one out. Melissa McCartney then move the runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt.
Parmer, who struck out six Temple batters on the day, issued her first walk, an intentional one, to TU's RBI leader Lynsey Grace. With the bases loaded, senior catcher Alexis Gary hit a grounder to short. Nichols fielded it cleanly but her throw to the plate was high and wide, allowing Rohn to score the game's first run. Adrienne Repsher then doubled to center to drive home Weigle and Grace. A third error by Nichols allowed pinch runner Emily Moller to score the final run of the inning.
Freshman pitcher Richelle Villescas was strong on the mound for Temple. The Owl hurler allowed just four hits while striking out five Quakers in picking up her team-high 10th win of the season (9 losses). She did not walk a batter in recording her third shutout of the year.
Temple next plays at Rider on Friday, April 9 (3:30 p.m.) before traveling to George Washington for an Atlantic 10 twinbill on April 10.
