5.1.04 | Softball
The Cherry & White pounded the Flyers in game one by scoring a run nearly every inning. In her first at-bat, lead-off hitter Katie Weigle reached base on an error by Dayton shortstop Tami Roudebush. Sophomore Jess Rohn laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Weigle into scoring position. Lynsey Grace then drove in Temple's first run with a single to right center field.
Junior Melissa McCartney started the third inning with a bunt to the pitcher. Safe at first, McCartney advanced to second on a sacrifice by Weigle. Rohn sent her second homer of the season over the left field fence to make it 3-0.
Gary led off the fourth inning with a single to right. Pinch-running for Gary, freshman Emily Moller stole second to advance into scoring position. Junior Aida Esquer singled down the leftfield line, sending Moller across the plate to score the Owls' fourth run of the game.
In the fifth inning Rohn doubled to right center field. She then advanced to third on a Grace single and crossed the plate on a fielder's choice off the bat of freshman Adrienne Repsher.
Temple put the final two runs on the board in the seventh inning as Grace homered to left with Rohn on first base.
Villescas (14-10) allowed fours hits and struck out 10 Flyers. Dayton's Melissa Myher (11-16) weathered the loss.
Temple managed only three hits in the first seven innings of play during the second game of the twinbill. Following a pop-up out at second by Rohn and a Grace groundout to short in the top of the eighth, Repsher doubled down the left field line. Gary sent an RBI single to center field to score Repsher with the game-winning run.
Although Dayton's Spence Izor broke-up Watkins' no-hitter with a base hit to left field in the bottom of the eighth, the Owls did not allow pinch runner Kristen Pfirrmann past first. With a strong defensive effort, the Cherry & White held on to the 1-0 victory.
Watkins (9-1) struck out six Flyers in her near-perfect effort on the mound. Watkins owns the A-10's lowest ERA (0.89).
The Owls continue their road stance next weekend as they travel to New York to take on St. Bonaventure. Doubleheader actions begins Sunday, May 9 at 12:00 p.m.
