ST. BONAVENTURE, NY -- The Temple University softball team completed regular season Atlantic 10 play by splitting a doubleheader with St. Bonaventure on Sunday afternoon. The Owls dropped a heart-breaking 1-0 loss in 12 innings in the first game then rebounded in the nightcap for a 5-2 win. Temple (25-15, 9-3 in Atlantic 10 play) will next travel Amherst, MA where they will take part in the A-10 Tournament from May 13-16.

After over eleven steady innings on the mound, Villescas gave the Bonnies the 1-0 win by walking home the sole run of the game. Game two saw Laura Gutscher pick up the Owls' offensive vigor by going 2-3 with a solo homerun and an RBI single, lifting Temple over St. Bonaventure, 5-2.

Throughout game one Temple was unable to convert on numerous scoring opportunities afforded by the Bonnies. With one out in the tenth inning, the Owls loaded the bases. Alexis Gary then struck out and Laura Gutscher fouled out to left field to end the inning.

St. Bonaventure loaded the bases in the bottom of the twelfth inning. With two outs, Richelle Villescas walked home the game-winning run. Villescas (14-11) struck out 11 Bonnies in the game.

Gutscher initiated the Owls' scoring in the second game by sending a solo homer over the fence in the second inning.

The Owls then put four more runs on the board in the sixth to take a 5-0 lead. With the bases loaded, a fielding error by St. Bonaventure shortstop Joelle Brunetto put senior Lynsey Grace on second base and sent two Owls across the plate. Freshman Adrienne Repsher and Gutscher each followed with RBI singles to increase the Temple lead to five runs.

St. Bonaventure attempted to answer back in a short-lived comeback in the bottom of the sixth. Two errors by Temple shortstop Aida Esquer allowed the Bonnies to score their only runs of the game. Temple hurler Kim Watkins struck out the final two batters to end the inning.

In seven innings Watkins allowed five hits, no earned runs, and struck out seven batters. With the win, Watkins advances her season record to 10-1.

The Owls, the #2-seed in the A-10 Tournament, will now take on #3-seed Saint Joseph's on Thursday at 2:00 p.m. Host UMass, the top-seed, will meet #4-seed Fordham at noon.
