PHILADELPHIA-The Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando has named Temple junior linebacker Rian "Goo" Wallace to the 2004 Butkus Award Watch List, a compilation of the best linebackers in college football. Wallace has already been named to the Bronko Nagurski Trophy and Chuck Bednarik Award Watch Lists, both presented to the nation's most outstanding defensive player and the Rotary Lombardi Award Watch List, presented to the country's top collegiate interior player.

Wallace, who ranks third among all Division I-A returnees in total tackles, has received numerous accolades this summer. He has been named a First Team Preseason All-American by CollegeFootballNews.com and a Third Team Preseason All-American by both Athlon Sports and Street & Smith's. Wallace was also recognized by The Sporting News as the Big East Conference Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

Wallace (6-4, 245), a Second Team All-Big East Conference honoree in 2003, concluded last season by being named a Second Team All-American by CollegeFootballNews.com and a First Team Sophomore All-American by CollegeSportsReport.com. He is the Big East's top returning tackler after posting the sixth-best single-season stops output in school history with 148 tackles (97 solo) and 19.5 tackles-for-losses in 2003. Wallace ranked second in the league and sixth nationally in total tackles (12.33 per game), first in the conference and eighth nationally in solo tackles (8.08) and tied for first in the league and tied for 11th nationally in TFLs (1.63).

This year's Butkus Award Watch List includes 65 noteworthy candidates that represent schools and conferences from across the nation. The independent selection committee for the 2004 Butkus Award, comprised of 30 of the nation's foremost national media members, is solely responsible for all voting in the selection process.

The Watch List will be trimmed to 10 semi-finalists on Thursday, October 14. That list will be cut down to three finalists which will be announced via a national teleconference with players, coaches, media members and Butkus Award officials on Thursday, November 11. The winner will be announced Friday, December 10, 2004.
