WOMEN'S SOCCER OPENS AMBLER FIELD WITH 1-0 VICTORY OVER LEHIGH
8.29.04 | Women's Soccer
"This isn't just a big win because it's the first game of the season," stated head coach David Jones, in his second year at the helm of the Cherry & White. "It is big because we are on a new field, with a new full-time coach. We went out prepared and did what we needed to do for the win.
"We made them adjust to our game, and if we can continue to do that, we will be very successful this season."
After a scoreless first half in which Lehigh out-shot Temple, 5-2, the Owls broke through, scoring the game-winner in the 60th minute of play. Vietry took a long diagonal pass from junior Trish Dalton, and put it past Lehigh goalie Erin Iwaskiewicz.
Sophomore goalkeeper Elizabeth Tarasevich, playing in place of the injured Jackie Mauro, made six saves to lead the Owls strong defense. It was her first collegiate shutout.
"Liz played a great game," stated Jones. "She hasn't been starting, but she showed a lot of confidence in the goal today."
Mauro, who was unable to play in goal due to a sprained right wrist, contributed off the bench, playing the field for the first time in eight years. She is expected back possibly as soon as next weekend.
Erin Iwaskiewicz posted two saves in goal for Lehigh (1-1).
The Mountain Hawks won last year's match held at Temple Stadium, 3-0. It was the last match coached by Seamus McWilliams in his 10-year career at Temple. Jones, an assistant with the Temple men's program, took over the team shortly thereafter on an interim basis and was named head coach on February 3, 2004.
The Owls (1-0) next play at the Niagara Tournament next weekend. Temple takes on host Niagara Friday (4:00 p.m.) and then plays Canisius Sunday (11:00 a.m.).
