COLLEGE PARK, MD -- The Temple University football team played a Top 25 ACC opponent for the second straight week. The result, unfortunately for Owl fans, was the same. This time it was #21 Maryland that dominated Temple to a tune of 45-22 in front of a crowd of 51,292 at Byrd Stadium.

The Terps, 2-0, scored on their first four possessions of the game to open up a 28-0 lead. Maryland's final possession of the half ended on a 45-yard field goal attempt by Nick Novak that went wide right. Maryland accumulated 319 yards of total offense to Temple's 100 yards. The Terps compiled 19 first downs over the first 30 minutes, while holding the Owls to just five.

Maryland quarterback Joel Statham hit J.J. Walker for a 12-yard touchdown pass with 10:25 remaining in the first quarter for the first score. Sammy Maldonado, who rushed for 106 yards and two touchdowns on 18 carries, then scored on a one-yard run. Next it was Josh Allen who capped a 14-play, 85-yard drive with a five-yard TD run to make it 21-0 with 9:31 to play in the half. Statham then hit Derrick Fenner for a 14-yard scoring pass with 3:54 on the clock to cap the first half scoring.

The Owls lone bright spots in the first half came on a 31-yard pass reception by Phil Goodman from Walter Washington and a sack for 10 yards by senior strong safety Lawrence Wade.

Temple opened the second half with a 45-yard,nine-play drive culminated by a three-yard touchdown run by Washington with 8:15 on the clock. The drive was initiated when sophomore free safety Durrell Davis hit Statham, forcing a fumble that was picked up by Troy Bennett and carried 18 yards to the Maryland 45.

Maryland picked up right where it left off in the first half after that. Statham, who was 18-for-25 268 yards and two TDs, directed an eight-play, 68-yard drive for the Terps' fifth touchdown on seven possessions. Maldonando rushed for 34 yards on five carries during the drive, capping it with his second touchdown, a three-yard plunge. The big play came on a third-and-17 from the Temple 41 when Statham hit Fenner for a 35-yard gain to the Owls' 6.

Washington then capped a nine-play, 91-yard drive, with his eighth rushing touchdown over his last three games. This one was an 18-yard run with 11:08 to play in the game. Washington kept the drive alive with a 40-yard pass play to tight end Christian Dunbar on a third-and-three one play earlier.

Umar Ferguson (10 rushes, 58 yards) fumbled on a fourth-and-one play with 6:30 remaining in the game, setting up a 39-yard Novak field goal.

Temple marched back for its third touchdown, this time it was Tim Brown capping a 72-yard drive with a one-yard run. It was the first career touchdown for the junior college All-American. Washington then ran the ball in from the three-yard line for the two-point conversion. Brown finished the game with 48 yards on 10 carries. He also had four receptions for 23 yards.

Maryland's final touchdown came on a Henry Scott fumble recovery in the end zone with 1:19 left.

Washington compiled 263 yards of total offense to lead the Cherry and White. The junior quarterback completed 16-of-27 for 188 yards while rushing for 75 yards on 15 carries.

Besides recovering a fumble, Bennett led the Temple defense with a career-high 16 tackles.

Temple, 0-2, returns home to Lincoln Financial Field to host Florida A&M on September 18. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
