FLORIDA A&M MARCHES INTO LINCOLN FINANCIAL FIELD TO TAKE ON TEMPLE

9.17.04 | Football

Temple hosts Florida A&M, under the leadership of 11th-year head coach and Coatesville, Pa. native William "Billy" Joe, at 2:00 p.m. Saturday on the natural grass of Lincoln Financial Field. The contest will mark the second meeting between the Owls and Rattlers. Temple defeated FAMU 38-17 at Veterans Stadium in 1986, a contest it later forfeited due to the use of an ineligible player.

The Owls utilize a spread offense and a 4-2-5 defense. Florida A&M operates a spread, "gulf coast" offense and both 4-6 and 4-3 defensive alignments.

Temple (0-2) is coming off a 45-22 loss at No. 21/23 Maryland last Saturday night, the Owls fifth straight contest against a nationally-ranked opponent. Temple was unable to overcome a 28-0 first half deficit but fought hard in the second half before 51,292 fans at sold out Byrd Stadium. Junior QB Walter Washington rushed for two second half scores and totaled 263 yards of total offense (75 rushing, 188 passing). He also rushed for a two-point conversion to tally 14 points versus the Terps. Washington has rushed for four TDs in two games this year and has now totaled eight rushing scores in his last three contests, including the 2003 season finale at West Virginia (4). The Daytona Beach, Fla. native leads the Big East and ranks seventh nationally in scoring with a 13.0 average.

Senior LB Troy Bennett made a career-high 16 tackles (seven solo), one TFL and recovered a fumble against the Terps, returning the miscue 18-yards to set up the Owls' first score. The Paulsboro, N.J. native leads the Big East in tackles with a 15.0-per game average.

Temple was flagged for its first penalty with 1:09 remaining in the first half. The Owls played the season's first 88 minutes and 51 seconds penalty-free.

Florida A&M (0-2), a NCAA Division I-AA independent, is fresh from a 39-19 loss to Tulane last Saturday night at the Superdome in New Orleans, La. The Rattlers are led by senior QB Ben Dougherty, who hails from Elma, Wash. and originally attended Iowa State out of high school. The FAMU "Marching 100" Band will perform pre-game and at halftime of the event.

Pre-game festivities began at 12:30 p.m. in the Headhouse Plaza area of the stadium with a live D.J., a drill team exhibition and a Greek Step Show featuring Temple fraternities and sororities.
