OWLS TAKE FLIGHT FOR TOLEDO TO MEET ROCKETS IN THEIR HOME OPENER
9.20.04 | Football
Temple head coach Bobby Wallace, fresh from his 100th career head coaching victory, leads the Owls into the Glass Bowl, site of Wallace's first game at the Temple helm, Saturday evening to take on Mid-American Conference member Toledo in the Rockets' home opener. Kick-off is slated for 7:00 p.m. at the 26,248-seat venue with a NeXturf field, the same surface that provided the landscape at Temple's former home, Veterans Stadium. The contest will mark the seventh meeting between the schools with the Rockets holding a 4-2 advantage.
Temple (1-2, 0-0) runs a spread offense and a 4-2-5 defense. Toledo (1-2, 1-0), under the direction of fourth-year head Tom Amstutz, utilizes a spread offense and a 4-4 defensive alignment.
Temple is coming off a 38-7, rain-soaked victory over Florida A&M last Saturday, the Owls' first victory at Lincoln Financial Field. QB Walter Washington totaled 341 yards of total offense (119 rushing, 222 passing) and rushed for two scores while throwing for another. The junior engineered scoring drives of 98, 94, 67, 66, 61 and 32 yards to snap a nine game Temple losing streak. Junior RB Umar Ferguson rushed a career-high 25 times for a career-best 118 yards to earn his first career 100-yard rushing game. Ferguson started in place of Tim Brown, who was sidelined with a foot injury. It marked the first time since 1997 that Temple had two players eclipse the 100-yard rushing plateau in the same game. Stacey Mack and Elmarko Jackson, the "Mack and Jack Attack," accomplished the feat versus Rutgers at the Vet.
Senior WR Ikey Chuku also had a career day, grabbing five aerials for 115 yards and a 17-yard TD. Defensively, Junior CB Ray Lamb was in the starting lineup, marking his return to the gridiron after suffering a knee injury in the spring game on April 24. Temple's 31-point margin of victory was its most since a 49 point win (56-7) over Connecticut on Nov. 24, 2001 at Franklin Field.
Washington leads the Big East and ranks fifth in the nation in scoring with a 12.67 average. He has rushed for six TDs in three games this season and 10 scores in his last four games (4 at WVU in 2003 season finale). Overall, Washington has accounted for 18 TDs (12 rushing, 6 passing) in his last eight games dating back to last season. On defense, senior LB Troy Bennett leads the Big East and ranks tied for 10th nationally in total tackles with a 12.0 average.
Toledo defeated Eastern Michigan 42-32 in Ypsilanti last Saturday night behind QB Bruce Gradkowski, who completed 22 of 27 passes for 338 yards and three TDs.
