AMBLER, PA - The Temple women's soccer team found its offensive groove against Delaware State University, defeating the Hornets, 8-0, Sunday at Ambler Field. Five different players combined for the eight goals, while four more contributed assists for one of the largest winning margins in the program's history. With the win, the Owls improve their record to 3-5.
Senior captain Christine McInaw started off the scoring in the 23rd minute when she received the ball from junior Steph Vietry and put it into the right side of the net. The goal was the first of the season for McInaw, and second of her career. It would eventually prove to be the game-winning goal, but the Owls continued to maintain pressure. Three-and-a-half minutes later McInaw tallied again to put the Owls ahead 2-0.
Two other players also had multiple goals in the match. Sophomore Elena Hekimian notched her first of the game, and of her career, in the 33rd minute of play. Sophomore Kelly Lare earned the assist. Junior Kiana Johnson scored shortly thereafter on an assist by senior captain Courtney Eaton.
Senior Nyki Stroman logged the final goal of the first half in the 43rd minute of play. She was assisted by junior Amanda Anderson.
Temple notched two goals in under a minute in the 52nd minute of the match. The first was scored by Johnson, her second of the game with Hekimian recording the assist. Thirty-eight seconds later freshman Debbie Painter sent one into the corner of the net, securing her first career goal.
Hekimian scored the last goal of the match when she received a ball that had deflected off of the crossbar and sent it back past the Hornets' goal keeper.
The Owls had 43 shots in game, 27 on goal. Shannon Wagner, in goal for the Hornets, made an impressive 19 saves over the course of the match.
Three players appeared in goal for the Owls. Senior Jackie Mauro played the entire first half, while sophomore Liz Tarasevich and junior Ashley Minchhoff split time in the second half. This was Minchhoff's first appearance in goal for the Owls. All three had a quiet day, as the Hornets failed to log a shot on goal.
The Owls effort left head coach David Jones optimistic for the remainder of the season. "Hopefully scoring the goals today will give us confidence for the upcoming games against our conference rivals," Jones said.
The team will next travel to New England for an Atlantic 10 road trip against Rhode Island (Oct, 1) and Massachusetts (Oct. 3).
