OWLS TAKE FLIGHT FOR COLLEGE PARK TO MEET NATIONALLY-RANKED TERRAPINS

Temple travels to College Park, Md. to meet its second nationally-ranked ACC opponent in as many weeks, and fifth straight nationally-ranked foe dating back to last season, squaring-off against the No. 21 (Coaches)/23 (AP) Terrapins Saturday evening. Kick-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. on the natural grass of 48,055-seat Byrd Stadium. The last time the Owls, known to be nocturnal birds of prey, played an evening contest, they defeated Middle Tennessee State, 44-36, last season.

The game will mark the fifth meeting between the schools, with the Terps having won the four prior meetings that took place in consecutive seasons from 1997 to 2000. The largest margin of victory in the series is 10 points, with three contests decided by a touchdown or less.

The two campuses are separated by a 136-mile, 2-hour, 28-minute drive. The Owls utilize a spread offense and a 4-2-5 defense. Maryland operates a multiple offense and multiple defense.

Temple is coming off a 44-14 loss to then No. 16/20 Virginia at Lincoln Financial Field last Saturday. The Owls fumbled on their first two possessions, which led to 10 Cavalier points in the game's first 10 minutes. Both Temple TDs came courtesy of Walter Washington rushes in the second half. The junior signal-caller has now rushed for seven TDs in his last three games and accounted for 13 TDs (eight rushing, five passing) in his last six contests dating back to last season. Senior LB Troy Bennett made a career-high 14 tackles (six solo) and a career-high 2.5 TFLs to pace the defense. Temple had 18 players compete in their first collegiate I-A game, including four starters (RB Tim Brown, CB Andrew Turner, OG Stephen Bell and CB Jermaine Hargraves).

The Owls did not commit a penalty versus Virginia, marking the first time since 1988 (East Carolina) that the Cherry & White was not whistled for an infraction. It was also a Big East Conference first.

Maryland is fresh from a 23-20 defeat of Northern Illinois at home last Saturday. The Huskies drove the ball to the Terps' 33-yard line in the game's final seconds but fell short of engineering another season-opening upset, such as they did over UM in 2003. Maryland kicker Nick Novak kicked three field goals and a pair of extra points to become the leading scorer in ACC history with 335 points.

The Owls are looking to snap an 18-game losing streak against nationally-ranked opponents dating back to the Owls' 28-24 upset of No. 10/14 Virginia Tech in 1998.
