PHILADELPHIA - Temple quarterback Walter Washington, the top scorer among Division I-A signal-callers with a 8.36 points-per-game (92 total points) average in 2004, today announced he will forgo his final season of eligibility and make himself available for the 2005 National Football League Draft.

Washington (6-2, 240), a 2004 Second Team All-Big East Conference selection, led the nation in rushing TDs by a quarterback during the regular season with 15, setting the Big East record for a QB and tying the Temple mark for total scores in a season (Paul Palmer; 1986). Washington led the Big East in total offense with a 281.5 average (3,096 total yards), to become Temple's first 3,000-yard player. He bettered the school's previous mark for total offense (2,577) set by Henry Burris in 1994 by 519 yards.

Washington set a Big East and Temple record for yards rushing by a QB in a season with 889 net yards (1,104 total) and was responsible for the Owls' final 16 TDs, while accounting for 25 of 29 (86%) overall. The Daytona Beach, Fla. (Mainland HS) native led the Big East and ranked 11th nationally in total offense, 22nd in point responsibility (13.82) and 21st in scoring. He set the Big East and Temple record for total plays with 554. His 2,207 passing yards ranks second and 889 rushing yards is 10th in Temple's single season annals.

Washington received the Owl Award as Temple's Most Valuable Player in voting conducted among his teammates and was named the Big East 2004 Player of the Year by CollegeFootballNews.com. He was also cited as a Fourth Team Junior All-American by CollegeSportsReport.com.

In the Temple career record books, Washington ranks fourth in total yards (4,940), tied for eighth in scoring (128 points), ninth in passing yards (3,472) and 12th in rushing yards (1,468).

Washington arrived in Owl Country after being runner-up for National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Player of the Year at Dodge City (Kan.) Community College in 2002.

Fifty-six Temple University football players have been selected in the NFL Draft since 1937. There were nine former Owls on NFL rosters this season.
